Jan Harmen was born in 1776.  Jan Harmen's father was Frans Stegemeijer (Hegemeijer) and his mother was Janna Hen(d)rica Weerman.  His maternal grandparents were Gerret (Gerard) Borghard (Boschard) Weerman and Henrina Scholten. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Jan Harm, Gerhard, Aleida Hendrica and Elisabeth.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
